Do you know that black pepper is the most popular spice in the world, and is also called the king of all spices? The active ingredient in black pepper is “piperine” and it acts as an antioxidant fighting cellular damages caused by free radicals. Black pepper also contains other anti-inflammatory compounds — including the essential oils limonene and beta-caryophyllene that may protect against inflammation, cellular damage, improve nutrient absorption, and aid digestive issues. In particular, it may improve the absorption of curcumin — the active ingredient in the popular anti-inflammatory spice turmeric (maybe that’s why most of the Indian recipes call for these two spices together). Research also shows that black pepper may improve the absorption of beta-carotene — a compound found in vegetables and fruits that your body converts to vitamin A. Beta-carotene functions as a powerful antioxidant that may combat cellular damage, thus preventing conditions like heart disease. Black pepper may promote proper stomach function. Specifically, consuming black pepper may stimulate the release of enzymes in your pancreas and intestines that help digest fat and carbs.
Jeera (or cumin seeds) is another popular spice known for promoting digestion and reducing food-borne infections. Research has also revealed some new benefits, such as promoting weight loss and improving blood sugar control and cholesterol. It is also a rich source of iron and also contains lots of plant compounds that are linked to potential health benefits, including terpenes, phenols, flavonoids and alkaloids. Several of these function as antioxidants, which are chemicals that reduce damage to your body from free radicals. Some of cumin’s components have shown promise helping to treat diabetes and aid in weight loss.
