Persimmon Turmeric Milkshake

For health reasons, my recent weekday mornings start with a hot black coffee followed by a healthy (and tasty) vegetable and/ or fruit smoothie made by my wife. Weekend mornings are reserved to enjoy hot Indian breakfast (idli, dosa, pongal, vada, puri or chapathi) in a relaxed setting.

Because we have to make smoothies almost everyday now, my wife and I are becoming more creative with the kind of ingredients that go into them. We are getting better with this, and you expect to see more tastier and healthier smoothie recipes from Senthil’s Kitchen in the future.

I still have few persimmons left in my fridge that were sent by my friend Krishna from California.  Today I experimented making Persimmon Turmeric Milkshake after reading about the health benefits of turmeric.

For more details on persimmons, visit my blog here. If you do not have persimmons in your pantry, or if these heavenly fruits are not in season, you can substitute them with sapota (or chikoo) fruit (fresh or frozen) that tastes very close to persimmons. You can also substitute with any other fruit of your choice for this turmeric milkshake if you do not mind your smoothie turning a bit yellow (and a bit more healthier…).

Let us quickly review the health benefits of turmeric before we dive into the recipe:

  • The humble yellow colored turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb.
  • Turmeric and especially its most active compound curcumin have many scientifically-proven health benefits, such as the potential to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer. It is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and may also help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis.
  • Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine, a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000%.
  • Curcumin may also help delay aging and fight age-related chronic diseases.
