Athi Pazham (Fig) Milkshake

I got some fresh homegrown Athi Pazham (Fig/ Ajneer) from my friend Ganesh. They tasted so delicious (thanks Ganesh!). I also made Athi Pazham Milkshake and it came out very yummy as well! Before we jump into the recipe, how many of you know about the health benefits of fig?

Fig belongs to the mulberry family and is native to Middle East and Asia. The raw, unripened fig is cooked and eaten as a vegetable. The fruit and leaves are used to make medicine. Fig leaves are used for diabetes, high cholesterol, and skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and vitiligo. Fig fruits are high in fiber (prevents constipation) and a good source of several essential minerals, including magnesium, manganese, calcium (which promotes bone density), copper, and potassium (which helps lower blood pressure), as well as vitamins, principally K and B6. Figs are also recommended to aid weight loss, lower cholesterol levels, control diabetes, prevent cancer, prevent macular degeneration and increase sexual health (stamina). There are also numerous other health benefits that are not listed here which you can learn from internet.

Ingredients

  • 8 Figs
  • 2 cups Milk chilled
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • pinch Cardamom powder or seeds only
  • pinch Nutmeg powder

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients, add more milk or sugar if needed.  Serve chilled.

Recipe Notes

  • Dried figs can be substituted for fresh one (soak them in water for 30 mins prior to blending).
  • Brown sugar or honey can be substituted for sugar.
