Black Chana and Yellow Pea Fry

I am sharing this recipe per recommendation from my dear cousin Praveen. Black Chana and Yellow Pea Fry is a very popular dish in my home town area (Thanjavur/ Kumbakonam).

My mom used to make this combination dish (or just black chana or yellow pea fry) whenever she made tamarind rice. Sometimes, she also made this dish as a side dish for sambar, rasam or yogurt rice.

You can make few more dishes out of this fry:

  • Black Chana and Yellow Pea Masala Rice: mix with hot rice, pinch of garam masala and ghee (both optional), and serve with chips and raita!
  • Black Chana and Yellow Pea Masala Gravy: slightly increase the quantity of the masalas and water.  Awesome side dish for jeera rice or parathas.
  • Black Chana and Yellow Pea Chaat: mix some chopped boiled potatoes, onion, tomatoes, green chilies, lime juice, mixture (or boondi or broken papdi), garam and chaat masalas.

If you have never tried cooking black chana and yellow pea together, and if you like them both, please consider giving this dish a try!

Ingredients

To pressure cook chana and peas

  • 1/2 cup Black chana soaked overnight
  • 1/2 cup Yellow pea soaked overnight
  • 1 tbsp Sambar powder
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Hing
  • 1/2 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste

For tadka/ masala

  • 1/2 tbsp Mustard seeds optional
  • 1/2 tbsp Fennel powder
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1/2 cup Onion chopped
  • 2 Green chilies chopped
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
  • 1/2 cup Tomatoes chopped
  • 1/4 cup Coconut paste
  • 2 tbsp Oil

For garnish

  • 2 tbsp Coriander leaves chopped

Instructions

  1. Wash and pressure cook soaked black chana and yellow peas along with sambar powder, turmeric powder, hing, salt and enough water for 3 whistles.

  2. Do the tadka with the ingredients listed. Make sure the onion and tomatoes are sauteed well. Add coconut paste and fry for couple of mins.

  3. Add the contents from the pressure cooker and mix well and cook (without cover) until the moisture evaporates and the fry gets to a semidry consistency.

  4. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Recipe Notes

  • Yellow peas tend to cook faster and get mashed up when compared to black chana, I manually release the pressure immediately after 3 whistles and check the consistency. If you have difficulty cooking them together, you can soak and cook them separately.
